About Matt Chao
Born and raised in Atlanta, I was active in myearly years with sports (basketball, track, cross country), music (piano), and school clubs. Leaving home in 2001 I attended Lee University (Cleveland, TN) on a full academic scholarship. My original pursuit was counseling psychology, but other interests led to a BA in English, History, Psychology, and Biblical Studies. I left Tennessee for Savannah, GA in 2005 and to marry to marry my high school sweetheart, Rose, whom I had been dating since age 16. During my school years, I worked in various fields…from residential remodeling to basketball referee to library science. After college I started a career as a life coach for young men and women – first, in a University setting and later, through an international non-profit organization, The Navigators. For nearly 10 years I worked among military personnel, college students, and young professionals to provide coaching on life, career, and spirituality, and I continue to do so as a volunteer. In 2009 I entered the world of finance as business manager for a small electrical contracting corporation. Later, after moving to the west coast, I spent two years trading independently on the foreign exchange market where I developed an interest in finance and macroeconomics. That is when a friend recommended I look into the mortgage industry as a way to combine my interest in finance with my passion for serving and coaching people. I am a lifelong autodidact and avid “do-it-yourselfer” with a passion for learning new things…from rebuilding transmission to front end web development. My wife and I enjoy training with barbells and kettlebells, camping and backpacking, and spending time with our four young children. I am also an avid reader and most enjoy ancient literature, children’s literature, poetry, and any non-fiction that piques my interest.
